Planning a wedding in Cape Town or the Cape Winelands in 2027? Here are the wedding décor trends set to define the next season — from sculptural florals and dramatic draping to layered tablescapes and intimate, atmospheric details.
Wedding décor has evolved far beyond simply choosing a colour palette and matching your flowers to your bridesmaids' dresses.
For 2027, wedding design is becoming more intentional, tactile and immersive. Rather than filling a venue with as many decorations as possible, couples are creating environments that feel considered, personal and beautifully connected to the setting.
And as a Cape Town wedding photographer, I couldn't be more excited about this shift.
Beautiful décor doesn't just create an incredible experience for your guests — it creates layers, texture and atmosphere that photograph beautifully and help tell the story of your wedding day.

1. Sculptural and Organic Florals
One of the biggest shifts we're seeing is away from traditional, perfectly symmetrical flower arrangements.
Instead, florals are becoming sculptural, organic and architectural.

Rather than asking, "How many flowers can we fit into this space?", couples are beginning to ask:
"Where will flowers have the greatest impact?"
This approach can actually make a wedding feel more luxurious because the eye has somewhere to rest.
For a wedding photographer, it also creates beautiful opportunities to photograph the relationship between the couple, the flowers and the architecture of the venue.
Current 2027 trend forecasts are similarly pointing toward larger sculptural installations alongside more restrained, intentional floral groupings.
2. Draping Becomes the Décor
Draping is having a serious moment.
But we're not talking about basic fabric backdrops.
For 2027, expect to see soft, flowing fabrics used architecturally throughout wedding spaces — from ceremony structures and ceilings to entrances, dining spaces and dance floors.
Sheer fabrics can create an ethereal, romantic atmosphere, while heavier textiles can make a reception feel intimate and dramatic.
Draping is particularly effective in large venues because it can completely change the feeling of a room without permanently altering the architecture.
And from a photography perspective, fabric introduces something incredibly valuable:
movement.
It catches the wind.
It catches the light.
It moves behind the bride.
It creates depth in photographs.
Dramatic draping is already emerging as a major wedding décor direction, with couples using fabric not just to hide or soften a venue, but as a deliberate design feature.
3. Warm, Earthy Colour Palettes
After years of extremely neutral weddings, colour is beginning to make its way back into wedding design.
But 2027 isn't necessarily about bright, bold colour everywhere.
Instead, we're seeing warm, sophisticated colour palettes.

The wedding table is becoming one of the most important pieces of the overall design.
Instead of simply placing flowers in the middle of a table, 2027 tablescapes are about layers.

Handmade ceramics
Interesting glassware
Natural stone
Seasonal flowers

Fruit and botanical elements
Mixed textures and materials

5. Lighting Becomes Part of the Design
One of the most underrated elements of wedding décor is lighting.
And in 2027, lighting is becoming much more intentional.
Instead of simply adding candles to the tables, couples are thinking about how the entire atmosphere changes from afternoon to evening.

And as a photographer, I love it.
Because beautiful light creates beautiful photographs.

Perhaps my favourite 2027 trend is that weddings are becoming less interested in looking like a Pinterest board.
Couples are beginning to ask:
"What actually feels like us?"
That might mean an unconventional colour palette.
A favourite flower.
A family heirloom.
A handwritten menu.
A table named after a place you've travelled together.
A dress that isn't traditionally bridal.
Or a reception that looks completely different from anything your guests have experienced before.
The most memorable weddings aren't necessarily the ones with the biggest budgets.
They're the ones where you can look around the room and immediately understand who the couple are. the following photo was taken at the grooms family home where the wedding took plave, no fancy decor or lights, yet the guests had an absolutely amazing time!
7. Designing for the Photograph
This might sound strange coming from a wedding photographer, but I don't believe couples should design their wedding purely for photographs.
Your wedding should first and foremost be an incredible experience to live.
However, good design naturally photographs beautifully.
Texture creates depth.
Movement creates emotion.
Interesting lighting creates atmosphere.
Thoughtful details create storytelling opportunities.
And a well-designed space gives your photographer something to work with.
That's why I love editorial wedding design.
It creates photographs that feel less like a collection of "wedding photos" and more like a visual story of an entire day.
8. Let the Venue Be Part of the Décor
For couples getting married in Cape Town, this is particularly important.
We are incredibly lucky to have wedding venues surrounded by some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world — from the Cape Winelands and Constantia vineyards to coastal estates and mountain landscapes.
The best décor doesn't necessarily compete with those surroundings.
It works with them.
A vineyard wedding doesn't need to hide the vineyard.
A historic Cape Dutch estate doesn't need to look like a ballroom.
A coastal wedding doesn't need to cover every surface in flowers.
Instead, décor can enhance what is already there.
This creates weddings that feel much more connected to their location — something that is particularly important for couples travelling to South Africa for a destination wedding. the following photo was taken at Mount Nelson, a perfect example where the architecture and the building can add as the decor.
Or the Vineyard hotel in Claremont, Cape Town is also a prime example of how the decor of the space can lend to the style of the wedding.
The 2027 Wedding Décor Philosophy
If I had to sum up the biggest wedding décor trend for 2027 in one sentence, it would be:
Less decoration for decoration's sake. More intentional design.
Couples are becoming more selective about where they spend their décor budget.
Rather than decorating every corner, they're creating a few meaningful moments that completely transform the atmosphere.
A beautifully designed tablescape.
A dramatic ceremony installation.
An incredible entrance.
Atmospheric lighting.
A floral installation that feels like a piece of art.
And all of these details become part of the visual story of your wedding day.
